What Is Reaction Time — and Can You Actually Improve It?
Reaction time is the gap between a stimulus appearing and your response beginning — the delay between a light turning green and your foot moving, between a ball changing direction and your hand adjusting. It is one of the oldest measurements in experimental psychology, studied continuously since the 1850s, and it remains one of the cleanest windows we have into how fast a nervous system processes information.
That gap feels instantaneous, but it is packed with work. Your retina has to transduce light into neural signals, your visual cortex has to recognise what changed, your decision systems have to select a response, and your motor cortex has to fire the right muscles. Every stage takes time, and the total is what a reaction-time test measures.
What counts as a normal reaction time?
For a simple visual stimulus — a light appears, you press a button — most healthy adults land between 200 and 300 milliseconds. Auditory reaction times are usually 30–50 ms faster than visual ones because auditory processing pathways are shorter. A few useful reference points:
- Under 200 ms — exceptional; typical of trained athletes and competitive gamers on a good day.
- 200–250 ms — fast; common in people in their teens and twenties.
- 250–300 ms — average adult range.
- Over 300 ms — common with fatigue, distraction, or simply age; reaction time lengthens gradually from our mid-twenties onward.
Choice reaction time — where you must pick between responses rather than just react — is always slower, typically adding 100 ms or more per decision. That is why a task like tapping the correct tile among several is a harder test than a single-button click.
Why your reaction time changes from day to day
Reaction time is one of the most sensitive everyday indicators of your brain's current state. The same person can vary by 50 ms or more between sessions. The biggest levers:
- Sleep. Even one short night measurably slows responses; sustained sleep restriction has effects comparable to alcohol intoxication in driving studies.
- Time of day. Most people are slowest immediately after waking and in the early-afternoon dip, fastest in late morning and early evening.
- Arousal level. Moderate alertness is optimal. Too relaxed and you respond sluggishly; too anxious and responses become fast but error-prone.
- Caffeine. Genuinely shortens reaction time by a small, reliable margin — roughly 10–30 ms in most studies.
- Age. Simple reaction time slows by roughly 2–6 ms per decade in adulthood, mostly due to slower central processing rather than slower muscles.
Can training actually make you faster?
Yes — with honest caveats. Research on reaction-time training shows three consistent findings.
1. Task-specific speed improves a lot
Practise any specific reaction task and you will get substantially faster at that task, often 10–20% within weeks. Part of the gain is perceptual (you learn what to look for), part is decisional (the stimulus-response mapping becomes automatic), and part is motor (your movement becomes more efficient).
2. General processing speed improves a little
Transfer to unrelated tasks is smaller but real, especially for choice reaction time. Training that forces rapid decisions under varied conditions — different positions, colours, timings — transfers better than repeating one fixed pattern, because it trains the decision stage rather than a single rehearsed response.
3. The biggest gains come from removing the brakes
For most adults, the fastest route to a quicker reaction time is not training at all — it is sleeping properly, managing stress, and staying physically active. Aerobic fitness in particular correlates with faster processing speed at every age, likely through better cerebral blood flow and white-matter health.
How to practise effectively
- Short, frequent sessions. Reaction speed degrades quickly with fatigue; five focused minutes beats thirty tired ones.
- Vary the challenge. Alternate simple-reaction tasks with choice-reaction tasks like Quick Sort or timing tasks like Perfect Stop.
- Track your numbers. Improvement is motivating and plateaus are informative — a sudden regression usually reflects your state, not your ability.
- Prioritise accuracy first. Speed built on guessing collapses under pressure. Push pace only once your error rate is low.
